Thinking long term used to mean planning for what your life was going to be in your sixties. Now it may mean caring about yourself five years from now. This world moves so quickly that thinking about life outside of a span of a few years feels daunting, unwise, and almost worthless.
The problem is however that most people don’t bother thinking even five years in advance. We tend to think in six to twelve month cycles, because it all feels so unsure beyond that. No you cannot predict the future, but perhaps it all feels unsure beyond that because we don’t spend much time creating a plan to eliminate the uncertainty of our future. The future version of yourself would appreciate the small plan you put together, even if it changes.
